A recent study suggests that individuals who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional diet and exercise plans.
Research printed in a leading health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Individuals purchasing these treatments need to be informed of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain suggests a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about one and a half years.
Weighing Therapies
The analysis, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Researchers emphasize that people who shed pounds through dieting typically experience a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Explaining the Fast Rebound
Doctors suggest the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified weight return.
These medications copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Condition?
The NHS recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians argue that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the therapy might need to be ongoing.
This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "highlight the chronic nature of obesity," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Accounts
People who have come off the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"I experienced a switch flipping and you become starving," described a patient.
This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Significant Adoption
Survey data suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.
- Adoption is higher among females than males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success relies on combined lifestyle changes.
