Widely circulated footage appeared to show Jones making an obscene gesture at Jets fans, though he maintains he was actually signaling approval to Dallas supporters present at the game as his team clinched a 37-22 victory.
“It was regrettable. It was essentially an exchange with Cowboys supporters seated near me,” Jones stated during a radio appearance. “There was a large group of Cowboys fans—not New York fans, our fans. The whole venue was filled with enthusiasm for the Cowboys.”
He further emphasized that the signal was completely accidental, occurring amid the elation following the team’s final touchdown. “I just put up the incorrect finger,” he noted. “It was inadvertently done. This is sincere. If you want to call it unplanned, you can. But it got corrected rapidly.”
League Precedent for Owner Fines
This is not the first time an league proprietor has been penalized for inappropriate behavior. Previous cases include:
- Panthers owner David Tepper was fined $300,000 for throwing a drink at spectators in January 2024.
- Then Titans owner Bud Adams was issued a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a similar obscene gesture.
Jones, who is recognized for his publicity flair, reportedly has an approximate net worth of $16 billion, so the penalty easily payable for the billionaire owner.
