Astronaut Reveals Mental Health Struggle After Deluge of Backlash After Historic Trip
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has spoken candidly about her battle with depression after being subjected to a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.
The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in April, which also included well-known figures.
The much-publicized journey was met with derision by some, who cited its expense and carbon footprint.
Reflecting on the ordeal, Ms. Nguyen, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction eclipsed her moment under an torrent of sexist abuse.
“I told her my depression might last for years,” the astronaut shared in a online statement, referring to a phone call from a fellow crew member in the period after the journey.
She portrayed the press attention and digital reaction as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.
“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she revealed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”
Buried Under Misogyny
The researcher, who has focused her career on female health science and conducted tests during the mission, said every professional achievement – including her lab work and extensive preparation to the symbolic importance of her roots – was overshadowed under the avalanche of gendered attacks.
She is most acclaimed for her groundbreaking advocacy championing the cause of victims of sexual violence.
Her own goal of reaching space was paused after surviving a rape during her college days, leading to a years-long quest for justice.
Finding Solid Ground
Now, eight months after fulfilling her dream, she has stated the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she acknowledged the followers whose support helped save her. “You all saved me,” she wrote.
She noted that amid the criticism, significant positive outcomes had emerged from the experience, such as elevated attention for her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.
The Historic Journey
The computer-piloted spacecraft departed Texas in the spring, carrying the all-female team on a 11-minute journey that passed the internationally recognized boundary of outer space.
